Module 1 · Lesson 1.4

Name one interface in your own work

One that costs you time or rework, and that you will work on through the course.

Lesson 4 of 4About 5 minutes

In lesson 1.1, the release handoff from Kraków to Pune cost Northlight’s users most of a day, and it kept happening because nobody had agreed what should pass across it. Most people can name a handoff like that in their own work within a minute.

Pause and think · your notes

Pick one interface in your own work that is important and recurring: it carries real weight, and it comes up again and again. Don’t pick a one-off irritation.

1. Who is on the other side of this interface?
2. What passes across it?
3. What goes wrong, and how often?
4. What does it cost you?

You will come back to this note in lesson 3.6, where you place the interface on the Continuum of Collaboration, and in lesson 6.1, where you choose the interface to build your own canvas for.

Next is Module 2, the Continuum of Specificity. It shows when to be precise about the words people use across an interface, and when general language is enough.
