Module 6 · Lesson 6.4

Where to go next

What you can now do, the one move underneath the whole course, and where to take it from here.

Lesson 4 of 4About 5 minutes

Key idea

Every structure in this course moves something far enough towards the specific end that people who don’t share the same picture can still act on it together.

You have finished the course

You have finished Structured Collaboration Foundations. You can now read the mix of collaboration across your interfaces, judge which ones deserve deliberate structure, write an operational definition two people would apply the same way, and record an interface on a canvas. You also have a draft canvas and a plan for one real interface in your own work.

The one move underneath everything

Every structure in this course does the same thing. It takes something sitting at the general end of the Continuum of Specificity and moves it far enough towards the specific end that people who don’t share the same picture can still act on it together.

Try it

One move, three structures

Each structure moves something from the general end of the Continuum of Specificity towards the specific end.

What it makes specific“Collaboration” itself.

The effort is made once, and again only when circumstances change. In between, “that’s not to spec” or “the run-book isn’t signed off” carries the full weight of an earlier agreement. The manager’s job is to know which relationships have earned that investment, which haven’t, and when an old agreement has quietly stopped holding.

Try it

Keep going with your interface

Tick each step as you take it. These ticks are for this visit only.

ProgressTick each step as you take it.

The Advanced level

The Advanced level builds on this course in two tracks.

Team leaders

Running a team on structured collaboration, from knowing the team’s demand and capacity to allocating work, keeping a daily and weekly rhythm, and connecting improvements upwards to the people who own the wider process.

Senior leaders

The structures above the team, including Process Owners and Process Managers, value streams, deploying strategy from an enterprise-wide canvas down to a team’s own quarter, and the Enterprise Execution Forum with its Forum Decision Canvas.

Other tools that connect

The canvas you built links to the other Structured Collaboration tools through the same organisation list, so nothing needs re-entering.

Process Management

To map the flow your interface sits in.

A3 Problem Solving

To work through an interface problem with a root cause, as Aoife Byrne did for Harbourline’s run-books.

Forum Decision Canvas

To record what the Enterprise Execution Forum decides about issues escalated from your canvas.

The Business Execution Canvas® Diagnostic can show how your organisation’s interfaces compare before and after you make changes. It is one way of measuring progress, not the only answer, and the right next step depends on what your own interfaces need.
