Module 5 · Check 5.5

Check: reading a canvas

Five questions on Harbourline’s canvases. Choose an answer to see straight away whether it is right, and why.

Lesson 4 of 4About 5 minutes

Keep the example beside you

Open the complete worked example, Harbourline: project to service handoffs, and keep it beside the questions; it opens in a new tab. It holds the four team canvases (Bids and Proposals, the Salesforce practice, Service Transition and the Service Desk), the three agreed definitions and the parking lot. Each question asks what you would conclude or do, not what the canvas calls things.

Question 1

In the Interfaces view, the Service Desk lists “Release notes and configuration changes” as an Input from the Salesforce practice, rated at 40%. The Salesforce practice canvas lists no matching Deliverable to the Service Desk. What does this tell you?

A need listed on only one side is a missing agreement, not a failure by the supplier, and the two teams can close it themselves.

Question 2

The Salesforce practice rates its Input “Signed contract with the promised service levels” from Bids and Proposals at 80%, even though “Delivery sign-off” is agreed and linked to both sides. What is the sensible next step?

A rating below 100% on an agreed interface is a prompt for a specific conversation, not proof the definition has failed or that nothing needs doing.

Question 3

Rohan Mehta’s parking-lot issue reads “Salesforce releases change configuration without telling support”. He asks whether to send it straight to the Enterprise Execution Forum. What do you advise?

The Forum is for issues a team can’t resolve on its own, and this one sits within the reach of the two teams on either side of the handoff.

Question 4

You want to record the run-book that Service Transition hands to the Service Desk before go-live. Where does it go on Service Transition’s canvas?

What a team hands on is a Deliverable to its Customer, and the same item is an Input on the receiving canvas, which is how the Interfaces view checks it from both sides.

Question 5

Two issues have been escalated to the Forum, one being that the project bonus in Systems Integration is still paid on the go-live date. Why is this on the Forum’s agenda rather than settled on a team canvas?

The canvas makes the conflict visible, but an incentive set across functions needs a decision above the teams that live with it.

Next is Module 6: choose one interface in your own work, give it the structure it needs on a canvas, and plan the conversation with the other side.
